Experience
Math tutor- Wheelock College ACT score: 34 I want to be a tutor because I love educating others. I find that working one-on-one with students to be very beneficial and rewarding. I am confident that both my diverse experience-from volunteering in the Middle East to teaching preschool in Dorchester- and my extensive education, both as an undergraduate at Wheelock College, and a current graduate student at UMASS Boston, would be a true asset to your overall education ecperience. As a current graduate student of UMASS Boston, I have maintained an above average GPA in my course work thus far, and continue to build my knowledge of ESL teaching and learning strategies on a daily basis. I am projected to graduate in December of 2016 with a Masters of Arts in Applied Linguistics and a focus in English as a second language. The program at UMASS covers all aspects of ESL teaching and learning including cultural awareness, and structures of the English language. In addition to my current graduate level schooling, I am an alumna of Wheelock College where I studied science and Elementary education. During my time at Wheelock I stayed in good academic standing and was awarded the Rising Star Award as a freshman, which recognized my presence as a leader amongst my peers. In addition, I was selected to work as a math leader, which required me to lead mandatory tutoring groups. Since the end of September, I have been living in the West Bank, Palestine. Here I have been volunteering my time at a school run by nuns, for local children. I have provided support and direction for teachers in the English language department with regards to lesson planning and implementation, and classroom management. Additionally, I am working directly with the school principal to improve educational approach, teacher training, and to obtain international recognition through building a school website. I will be returning to Boston at the beginning of January. Over the years I have worked with youth in several different settings both educational and less formal. The children are the future of our nation and therefore maintaining an informative, nurturing, captivating environment is very important. Learning takes place both in and out of the formal classroom, therefore it is highly important to provide children with captivating and rich experiences whenever possible.
